Air Vents - Do you require an air vent?

If a solid fuel burner has a nominal heat output of 5kw or below you do not require an air vent. If the stove has a nominal heat output superior to 5kw you must have a vent that cannot be closed. The vent must be within the same room as the stove and go to an outside wall. There are sadly people who advise that you can always open a window. If you come across this sort of service you could save yourselves a lot of time and money and show the person to the nearest door.

Corgi

Corgi is the old classification for gas registered engineers and is no longer valid.

Damage during installation

When removing existing fireplaces and or surrounds we cannot be held responsible for the integrity of items installed before our arrival. Although we will always try and assist every customer we cannot, unless specifically stated in a quotation be held responsible for the integrity of the parts or pieces already in situ and any placing of an order implies that the customer fully understands and accepts this. If in doubt, please ask. It is the responsibility of the customer to remove any sensitive or valuable items and any items that may offer an encumbrance to the work prior to our installation.

Decorating

We never decorate or undertake any repairs or maintenance of coving and skirting unless specifically detailed in the quotation.

DEFRA - What is DEFRA?

The Department for the Environment and Rural Affairs is the UK government department responsible for policy and regulations on the environment, food and rural affairs www.defra.gov.uk

Delivery

When would I expect to receive my order? Delivery times vary according to the product and manufacturer. We aim to deliver all orders within 14 days, although we do advise that some orders may take up to 28 days. If you have not been contacted within the usual 14 days and time is of the essence, please call our office for a progress report. We will deliver your order earlier if it is available. On all larger orders we will contact you before the despatch of your order to arrange a suitable date for delivery. Deliveries will be made using our selected courier company or through a more practical source if available. Due to the nature of the courier firm we are able to specify a delivery date, although we are unable to specify a delivery time during the day.

Fitters - Are the fitters employed by Flamesurge HETAS registered?

Yes, the fitters we use for Wood and multi-fuel stoves are HETAS registered.

Are the fitters Gas Safe Registered?

We do not employ our own fitters for gas fires.

Gas Safe - What is Gas safe?

The Gas Safe Register replaced the Corgi Gas Register in Great Britain and the Isle of Man on 1st April 2009 www.gassaferegister.co.uk

Look for the yellow Gas Safe Register triangle not the orange CORGI registration badge. Anyone carrying out work on gas must be registered with Gas Safe Register. If not, they are breaking the law and putting you and your family at risk.

Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is legally allowed to install gas appliances, boilers, hobs, ovens or fires in your home or workplace. You must only use a Gas Safe registered engineer for any type of gas work, including installation, maintenance and servicing.

Gas stoves

Fewer and fewer manufacturers are producing gas stoves. There are gas stoves available for Natural Gas and LPG. Some stoves are for Conventional Flues, some for Balanced Flues and some Flueless homes. We have a variety of gas stoves on display and do remember only a Gas Safe registered fitter for installation.

HETAS - What is HETAS?

HETAS is the official body recognised by government to approve solid fuel domestic heating appliances, fuels and services. Its work in Approving products covers boilers, cookers, open fires and stoves and room heaters. It also lists in its Official Guide, factory made chimneys and carbon monoxide detectors and alarms suitable for use with solid fuel. www.hetas.co.uk

How to find us

You can visit our showroom in Olton, which is located in at 187 189 Warwick Road, Olton B92 7AW.

Lining the chimney. Do you need to line the chimney?

Each installation is different and you may require lining to improve the draw, stop leaks, conform to local regulations etc this is something that we would cover as part of our site survey. Would we recommend lining the chimney? Modern quality stoves lose very little heat up the chimney and this means that the flue gases cool quicker resulting in a build up of tar. As mentioned elsewhere, it is essential that only wood with a moisture content less than 20% should be used. Once you have a chimney full of tar it is a nightmare to remove and we will always recommend that you line your chimney.

Patch Plastering

We are not decorators or plasterers, we offer “Patch plastering” which is suitable for decorating. Should you require a superior finish we can bring in a qualified plasterer at extra cost. Please ensure you arrange this at the point of order.

Log Stores

The ideal way to store wood is in a log store. A bigger store can be built for long-term storage at he end of a garden but it is practicable to have a smaller store nearer to your door so that you don’t have a long cold walk in those wet winter months. The concept is simple, raised off the floor, the log store should have a solid roof, relatively solid sides and be open to the air. You can see examples at our shop and we can provide bespoke stores delivered to your home that are very easily assembled or we can assemble them for you.

Multi-fuel stoves

We will never discourage you from purchasing a multi-fuel stove however we only burn seasoned wood. Remember that a wood-burning stove is for wood only and multi-fuel stoves burn smokeless fuels, purpose built briquettes, and wood. Under no circumstances should you burn old fashioned coal.

Quotations - What is our Quotation Policy?

We do not normally charge to do site visits and or quotations but obviously there is no sense for either a customer or ourselves for us to travel huge distances too early in the process. In busy periods and for excessive distances we can easily work from photos and drawings. E mail via the website enquiry system or directly to sales@flamesurge.co.uk

Wood

The quality of wood and it’s calorific content is a subject too detailed to cover here. Suffice to say, only burn “Seasoned Hard Wood” that is wood with an absolute maximum moisture content of 20%. Ideally your wood will be Hard Wood and you will always purchase it by volume rather than weight. Do remember, you will never get any heat from wet wood!
